State employees take furloughs on March 19

State workers take their next unpaid furlough on Friday, March 19, closing nearly all state agencies for the day.

About 26,500 state employees will take the mandatory day off as the third of 10 furlough days scheduled during the two-year budget cycle. Each furlough day saves an estimated $2 million in personnel costs, according to Scott Harra, director of the state Department of Administrative Services.

“We apologize for any inconvenience these closures might cause to the public, and we look forward to restoration of a full work schedule for all state agencies when the economy returns to its normal strength,” Harra said.

Even with the closures, people will still be able to do business with many state agencies online, Harra said.
