An offensive explosion to begin both halves gave the Grant High girls the edge they needed to win their first-round playoff game at home against Lakeridge 73-68 Tuesday.
Grant (18-5), which took second place in the PIL 6A behind Franklin, began the game with a 12-2 run and opened the second half with a 17-2 run. The Generals forced multiple turnovers on both runs, several coming in the backcourt with their fullcourt press and half-court trap.
“We’re pretty quick,” first-year Grant coach Kara Sandoval said. “When we play defense like we can, we’re pretty hard to compete with. It’s defense for us every day. That’s where we get our points.”
During the Generals' 17-2 run in the third quarter, 5-3 junior guard Ra’zja Goodman caught fire. She forced several turnovers and scored 15 of her game-high 29 points in the quarter.
“I just had a lot of energy,” Goodman said. “I was just doing what I usually do. My teammates were getting me really pumped up. I just fed off their energy."
